Denise Shaw welcomes you to 'Walks with Spirit'
Sacred Medicine Drum Making Ceremony

Making your own drum is a wonderful spiritual experience, I hold dear to my heart the drum and the drum medicine. I have made many drums and shown many, many others how to make their own medicine drums respectfully and ceremoniously.

Drum Making

I wish from my heart to share the medicine of the drum and the teachings of the elders so others may make their journey a fruitful and joyous one. To teach the connection with all my relations is a great honour.

The ceremony commences always with a Grandfather sage smudging of all utensils to be used, Smudging and prayers for the four legged, deer standing ones (trees) are honoured and prayer given also. Each person is smudged with white sage grown organically and loving by Eartharomas.

Each ceremony honours The Great Spirit, the four directions, Eagle nation and Mother Earth, the four colours of peoples the red, black, yellow and white and the four elements the air, wind, fire and water.

Drum Selection

Prayer of respect, honour, connection and thanks to Great Spirit are offered and given also for the sacrifice for the deer and the standing ones, Great Spirit, Higher Selves, Ancients and Elders, Medicine Men, Healers, four legged and feathered ones are invited to attend along with other spirits that are for the highest good of the ceremony.

Connection is made with their spirit guides. Participants are asked to honour their own journey and guidance by not speaking unnecessarily during the ceremony. Participants are asked to be aware of their thoughts while making their drum as energy flows where the attention goes, and to honour the process they should remain focused. This enhances the medicine that they are weaving into their drum.

Teachings are given about the healing power of the drum and once they open to the medicine they will begin a healing journey of their mind, body and spirit. They may also experience a physical detoxification after making their drum.

The stringing and weaving is completed without knots as the Native peoples believe that the knots stop the flow of energy.

Grey Wolf

The Drum is a great teacher and lessons may show during the drum making, emotion and traits like anger and perfectionism may rise in the participant, these are acknowledged as part of themselves. These lessons arise so the participate may send love to these elements and create a balance within themselves to control the masculine energies. Respect to the Grandmothers is taught by not placing the drums on the face. Respect for the winged ones is taught by never placing drums with feathers on the earth.

I honour the teachings of Grey Wolf, an Elder, an Alaskan Inuit, whose photo is placed in a prominent place for all drum making and drumming circles out of respect for his teachings.

DRUMMING

What is drumming all about? Hearing our mother's heartbeat safe within the womb was our first experience of music. Two rhythms drumming together to create a song as unique as each of us, as universal and ageless as eternity. Everyone innately knows how to go about drumming. There is no right or wrong way to express yourself drumming.

In natural law chaos is followed by order, In our lives today fear and chaos often rule and our deep longings are often unfulfilled, This spiritual hunger is unmet in most and the deep rhythms inside us are longing for expression. There is a deep longing to be a part of a whole.

In traditional cultures, music and dance and laughter are in abundance. There is a deep trust in each other. The sacred is honoured in all things, and the drum provides the foundation. Drumming wakes up and stirs the soul.

Sacred Drum

When you sit down to make a drum it becomes your teacher. The drum will help you to remember that you and it are sacred as you begin your relationship with it. It will remind you to be respectful to the spirits of the tree and animal you are working with. Sometimes when you make a drum it will teach you about blocks you may have in your life such as perfectionism, blame impatience, intolerance, envy, fear and pride. Making a drum and Drumming can be an active meditation. Drumming creates healing and balance.

Drum

Deer Medicine: Each animal from which drums are made has its own medicine. Deer medicine touches and heals our hearts. Deer will open you to the higher Drum truth of the intention of your heart. Drumming with deer is powerful medicine.
